Dostana Dostana Na Raha

Posted by Broom on Nov 17, 2008 in bollywood |

So where do I begin? Should it be with a rant about feeling like KJo sold out his fellow gay community? Or should it be with a rant about how Florida outlawed gay marriage and so Kunal and Sam filing for “same-sex residency” in Miami was a little, shall we say, inaccurate? Or should I start with a rant about how even if you ignore all the stupidity of the movie, there still isn’t much of a plot or much of anything that could redeem Dostana. Ok, I’ll give it a little credit for the “Gabbar is so gay” dialogue.

Don’t waste your time.

[...] Broom and MJ, on the other hand, take offense on behalf of the gay community and feel done in by Karan Johar’s latest effort. [...]

I admit that I did laugh through some bits of the film. But I think what got to me was the portrayal of every gay person in the film fits this stereotype – a character for comic relief. Almost as though being gay means you are some sort of an entertainer, plus personal shopper rolled into one. Plus, there’s this assumption that gay people are on the constant lookout for partners, as though commitment is never an issue.

It’s almost as though someone tells you that being gay is good because it provides women with company that doesn’t sexually threaten them. And helps them look better by giving them advice on clothes.

On the other hand, it’s a pretty good look at the mindset of the casually homophobic Indian male. I tried to keep in mind that this is a story about two jerks and found the movie much easier to swallow.

But the point is how many did think the leading men to be jerks? Like tons of other Bollywood flicks went in with the message ‘Alls fair in love and war’. The sensitivity factor they invested in showcasing the ‘friendship’…between ‘friend and friend’s mum’…between ‘the girl and probable boyfriend’….if only half was spent on the gay sub-plot.

I don’t disagree with your observations but at the same time I think you guys had too much expectations from the paisa vasool type of movie. Its a Karan Johar movie after all and not Ang Lee or Onir’s . Plus, John Abraham’s butt shots redeem the movie pants down!!! :-)

I agree the plot and all wasn’t up to par…
But man oh man… I am deeply in love, more than I ever was… John stole the show for me and could go watch it again just for him…
Yes, I sound like a teenage girl right now lol but phew… he was yummehhh

Saks – if anyone thought they were the good guys after watching them systematically destroy that poor little kid so they could woo a girl who didn’t even know they were interested in her… well, then that would say a lot more about the audience than the film.

However… :(
